W E S Turner, British professor of glass technology, 1945. Pencil sketch by Helen Turner of Professor William Ernest Stephen Turner (1881-1963). Turner was responsible for founding the academic discipline of glass technology in 1916, bringing together all those interested in glass production and the application of scientific methods to industrial problems. He was also a keen and imaginative glass collector, and founded 'The Museum of Glass', one of the country's most comprehensive collections of 19th and 20th century glass, at Sheffield University where he was Professor of Glass Technology. ©SSPL/Science Museum
