Professor Auguste Piccard's second high altitude balloon ascent, 1932. This photograph was taken on 18 August 1932 at Duebendorf, Switzerland. The balloon is depicted at night filled with hydrogen just before release. On 27 May 1931 at Augsburg in Germany, Professor Piccard and his assistant Paul Kipfer reached a world record altitude of 51,775 feet in a balloon. It comprised a sealed cabin gondola fitted with an internal supply of oxygen. ©SSPL/Science Museum
