Presbytery of Huesca Cathedral, Spain, 2007 (photo)

Huesca is a city in north-eastern Spain, within the autonomous community of Aragon. The Huesca Cathedral (Catedral de la Transfiguracion del Senor) is in Gothic style. Its construction began during the reign of King James I of Aragon around 1273 on the ruined foundations of a mosque and was completed in the 15th century. The altarpiece at the presbytery is a magnificent alabaster work by Damia Forment (1480-1540), executed between 1520 and 1533. The work combines the Gothic style in the decorative and structural elements with the Renaissance style in the figures and groups that make the different scenes. The central 'oculus' or 'eye' is a feature typical of Aragon. This window opens into a small chapel where the Blessed Sacrament was reserved.
