Clocks, Regulator Replacement case from Shelton regulator clock, 1882. Replacement glazed mahogany case for Shelton's regulator clock with mounting bracket and grid iron pendulum, made by the United States Coastal and Geodetic Survey in 1882.Ê sidereal clock made for the Royal Society in 1768 or 1769 by John Shelton (1712-1777) of Shoe Lane, London, and was originally used for timing the transit of the planet Venus across the Sun, a rare astonomical event which occured in 1769. The clock measures sidereal time (time measured from the apparent movement of the stars) instead of solar time (time measured from the apparent movement of the sun). ©SSPL/Science Museum
