Chemical Laboratories, 1850-1949 Uranyl nitrate (nitrate d'uranyle) solution in glass flask, 1905. A solution of uranyl nitrate (UO2(NO3)2 was prepared by Frederick Soddy (1877-1956), an English chemist, as part of his research into the transmutation of elements. It contains radium and is highly radioactive. Its bright yellow colour is typical of uranium compounds.
