Alexander McKay, geologist, c 1900. McKay (1841-1917) emigrated to New Zealand from Scotland in 1863. Always interested in geology, he was largely self-taught, and was employed by Julius Haast and James Hector as a fossil collector. In the late 19th century he became involved with the Geological Survey. His reports were the main source of information on the geology of some parts of New Zealand until the 1950s.
