Lalpura from the ferry, 1878.
Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1878.
Lalpura village was located to the south of Jalalabad and was controlled by the Khan of Lalpur, one of the most powerful Mohmand chiefs in the Peshawar valley. Initially, the Khan was on fairly good terms with the British but after Major-General Frederick Roberts arrest of Yakub Khans wife who was also the Khans daughter - for spying, the outraged Mohmands began systematically to harass the British line of supply near Jalalabad.
From an album of 100 photographs by John Burke, 1878 (c).
