Dense opaque watercolour was quite often used for ideal landscapes in the late 18th century. The strong colour allowed artists to create a golden glow of bright sun over the scene. In this picture, John Laporte has used a decorative approach, using shades of bright blue for the sky, the background trees, and for shading on the grass. The view itself is imaginary. Laporte was drawing master at Addiscombe Military Academy, as well as teaching many private pupils;
