William Knell was the most accomplished of a family of marine painters. Working in both oil and watercolour, he went on to become one of the most distinguished marine painters of the Victorian period. Between 1825 and 1867 he exhibited 93 paintings at the principal London galleries, including the Royal Academy. Most of his subjects are views on the English coast, but he also painted the Dutch, Belgian and French coasts. He also illustrated a book on naval history.
