Les Dentelles du Cygne - Detail - NGC 6960 - The Veil Nebula, NGC 6960 - Part of the rest of the supernova of the Dentelles du Swan lies about 1500 years - light from Earth. Ten thousand years ago a star exploded. The supernova remnant is called the Veil Nebula. Here is the west end of the Veil Nebula known as NGC 6960 or the Witch's Broom Nebula. The rampaging gas gains its colors by impacting and exciting existing nearby gas. The supernova remnant lies about 1,400 light - years away towards the constellation of Cygnus. The bright star 52 Cygnus is visible with the unaided eye from a dark location but unrelated to the ancient supernova. The filaments in the right upper portion of the image is commonly called Pickering's Triangle. It was discovered in 1904 by Williamina Fleming of the Harvard Observatory while examining photographic plates of the region. The object was named in honor of her boss, astronomer Edward Charles Pickering

Constellation of Hercules - Constellation of Hercules - Constellation of Hercules and Boreal Crown. On the left, the bright star is Vega de la Lyre. Hercules, the Roman Hero, is best known for his twelve labours, mentioned throughout the Greek constellation legends as Herakles, who is sometimes identified with the much older (5000 BC) Sumerian strong man Gilgamesh. To the Greeks he was the son of Zeus and the earthly queen Alkmene. Zeus' goddess wife Hera was not best pleased and sought to destroy Herakles. Later he was to accomplish eight heroic acts as well as his famous 12 labours, these last perhaps representing the Sun's passage through the zodiacal constellations. The constellation is the fifth largest in the sky but does not catch the eye and has no bright stars rivaling Vega in adjoining Lyra or even the much fainter Gemma in Corona Borealis to the west. The most massive region of star formation is around 30 Doradus (the Tarantula nebula) which can be seen with the unaided eye, but hundreds of lesser examples are visible with a telescope. This picture shows one of the more intriguing, NGC 2014 (Henize 55), at right. It contains cluster of hot, young stars, almost hidden in the brightest part of the nebula. The energetic ultraviolet light from these stars is absorbed by hydrogen and produces the distinctive red glow from an enormous distance around the cluster. Open Cluster of Pleiades - The Pleiades star cluster - The Pleiades cluster is a cluster of about 500 young stars nees 150 million years ago. Visible in the constellation Taurus, this cluster is 440 years from the Earth. The Pleiades are one of the finest and nearest examples of a reflection nebula associated with a cluster of young stars. The cluster itself is a group of many hundreds of stars about 400 light years from Earth in the northern constellation of Taurus and has been recognised since ancient times. Seven of the brightest stars are quite easy to see with the unaided eye and bear the names of the Seven Sisters, the daughters of Atlas. The nebulosity seen here is light reflected from the particles in a cloud of cold gas and dust into which the cluster has drifted. It appears blue because these tiny interstellar particles scatter blue light more efficiently than the longer wavelengths of red light and it is streaky because of the distribution of dust particles in space

Apr. 04, 1953 - Seven German Children Back from Czechoslovakia! After separation from more than 6 years, seven German children were reunited with their parents on Wednesday, April 15th by the regular train Prague-Schirnding-Paris. At the frontier check and control point Schirnding these little kids were welcome by personal of the Red Cross and the over happy parents. When German Citizen were expelled from Czechoslovakia after unconditional surrender all kids were forced to remain with their relatives in Czechoslovakia. The Czech authorities finally accepted the numerous applications of the parents for the return of their children. Leading officials of the Red Cross hope that transports with returning German children from Czechoslovakia will never more stopped. Our Picture Shows: Maria Fuchs, 11 years, who lost an eye and one arm in connection with an air raid. She is being taken care by an Red Cross sister, who is going to bring her to her parents, residence of Neustadt and der Waldnaa

The bright star is 52 Cygnus, a star visible to the naked eye that is not associated with lace. The Veil Nebula (NGC 6960) is part of a supernova remnant known as the Cygnus Loop. It is the shattered remains of one, and possibly two, supernovae that exploded less than 10,000 years ago in the direction of the constellation Cygnus, the Swan. At the time of the explosion, it would have been seen as a very bright star, rivaling the crescent Moon. The bright star at right, known as 52 Cygnus, is not associated with the supernova.
