Traces of flow on Mars - Mars: gullies on impact crater wall - Gullies along a wall of an impact crater (Hale crater). These ravines are thought to indicate the presence of liquid water in the Martian basement. Image obtained by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter probe on August 3, 2009. Gullies, on Earth, are usually formed through the action of liquid water. Whether gullies form under today's cold dry conditions on Mars is a major question that planetary scientists are trying to answer. The gullies pictured here in Hale crater are great examples of what a typical Martian gully looks like. Traces of flow on Mars - Mars: gullies on impact crater wall - Gullies along a wall of an impact crater (Hale crater). Elephant tube nebula (VDB 142) in Cephee - The Elephant Trunk Nebula (VDB 142) in Cepheus - IC1396, VDB 142. Nebula located about 2700 years - light from Earth. The Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) in Cepheus is part of the larger IC 1396 complex which spans a large area of the sky measuring 170 by 140 arc - minutes and is one of the brightest emission nebulae with a magnitude of 3.5. The western portion of IC 1396 contains the Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) which is characterized with H - II emissions, dark lanes and globules as well as a small reflection nebula. The IC 1396 complex is technically a star cluster (aka Cr 439, Trumpler 37) owing to the presence of a developing open but loose cluster at the heart of this rich nebulosity. This open star cluster is comprised of 50 - 100 member stars which vary in brightness spanning an area of approximately 50 'in diameter and which are not very well detached from the background sky. This stellar nursery lies at a distance of 2,720 light

Spiral galaxy M33 in the Triangle - Spiral galaxy M33 in Triangulum - M33, (NGC 598), the galaxy of the Triangle, is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. It belongs to the local group, just like our galaxy or Andromede galaxy. Image made with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. The Pinwheel Galaxy, M33, is a very large, beautiful, face - on spiral galaxy. It is more difficult to observe at magnification than its size and magnitude would indicate under skies that are not dark because of it's fairly low surface brightness. Still, under very dark and transparent skies, M33 can be seen with the unaided eye by keen - eyed observers. Several emission nebulae inside of M33 can be seen as pink patches in this photo. The largest and most prominent emission nebula is NGC 604 which is almost 1,500 light - years in diameter.
