On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Blare's Corner, Isaac Place's Ferry & the Customs hut by the side of which casks of spirit etc. were sampled & tested in a Sykes' Hydrometer. The 'shears' for hoisting the casks are visible just behind the hut. In holiday time, this process had enthralling interest for self and congeners; especially if Tommy the Wad[?] was permitted to suck up the fluid in the tin pipette, when he would end the day in the lock-up.
