Battle of Kolin, 1757. One of the principal victories gained by the Austrians during the Seven Years War (1756-1763) was the battle of Kolin (18 June 1757). At this place, which is situated about forty miles east of Prague, the Austrians under Daun defeated the Prussians under Frederick the Great. The Prussians lost fourteen thousand men in killed, wounded, and prisoners, while the Austrian losses amounted to eight thousand men. As a result of this victory Frederick the Great was compelled to raise the siege of Prague and to evacuate Bohemia. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920).
