Other ranks shako plate, 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot, gilding metal, 1855-1861. Plate die-struck in one piece: an eight-pointed rayed star with top point displaced by a Victorian crown. Raised in the centre of the star is a round Garter with Garter Motto in smooth lettering on a matt ground and with smooth edges. The Garter has a pendant tip with an ornate tag. Within Garter the centre is slightly domed and horizontally ribbed. In centre is the number, '40', in relief in Arabic numerals. On reverse is soldered a wire eyeloop fastening at one side.; Inscribed: '40'; 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot 1786-1881
