Image title
Alice Roosevelt is carried through the streets of Seoul in an Imperial sedan chair to the palace for an audience with the Emperor of Korea on September 20, 1905, cover illustration from 'Le Petit Parisien' magazine, 8 October, 1905 (colour litho)
Alice Roosevelt Longworth (1884-1980) eldest daughter of Theodore Roosevelt ( 26th President of the United States of America 1901-09) accompanied the U.S. Congressional delegation to the Far East on a tour of Japan, the Philippines, China and Korea; Miss Roosevelt was called 'Princess Alice' by the international press during her trip; mission led by U.S. Secretary of War, William Howard Taft (later 27th President of the USA 1909-13) and was the largest diplomatic mission in American history with 23 Congressmen and seven Senators and was known as the 'Imperial Cruise'; apart from being a 'goodwill' visit connected with President Roosevelt's mediation to establish peace and end the Russo-Japanese War, one of the covert purposes of the mission was to establish a U.S. pact of cooperation with Japan, by which the U.S. agreed to Japanese suzerainty over Korea in return for Japan's indication that it had no 'aggressive designs on the Philippines'; this later led to the annexation of Korea by Japan in 1910;'Miss Roosevelt se rendant chez l'Empereur de Corée'; Gojong (1852-1919) Emperor Gwangmu, twenty-sixth King of the Joseon dynasty and first Emperor of Korea (1897-1907);
