Nivâ, collection Nivaagaard This work by Blunck, with its subject inspired from Fuseli's famous painting The Nightmare (1781), is an anomaly in the Danish Golden Age. A woman asleep in bed is terrorised by an incubus, a male demon who, according to popular belief, takes form and comes to rape women in the night. But the woman's pose and disorderly bedchamber suggests that she is in the throes of pleasure and passion.
