Image description

Tragic Mille Miglia. One of the most terrifying misfortunes that the history of motoring remembers has plagued the 24th edition of the race; while, launched at over 280 kilometers per hour, it ran on the straight, just outside of Guidizzolo (Mantua), the car driven by the Spaniard Alfonso De Portago, for the explosion of a tire, went off the road and ended up, with a fearful flight, in the middle of a group of people. In the catastrophe, De Portago himself, its second pilot, the American journalist Eddy Nelson, and nine spectators, including five children, lost their lives. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 26 May 1957.
