This view of Ashington village in Northumberland shows the main street leading past the church and rows of terraced houses to the coal pit. The people include miners in their pit shorts and boys playing in the street. Two women are shaking a mat on the right of the scene. Behind them, a man is shovelling coal into the coal store of one of the houses. Harry Wilson was one of the Ashington Group of miners and artists. The Ashington artists produced paintings of their mining community in the 1930s and 1940s, after an art group was set up by Robert Lyon in 1934;
