Kehar Singh (R), an Environment Officer records the particulars of a littering offender (C with cap) in downtown Singapore September 19. The unidentified violator had thrown a cigarette butt onto the streets when booked. A spokesman from Singapore's Ministry of Environment disclosed that 5,858 people from age 16-65 were booked for various types of littering offences in the first six months of the year compared to 2,383 for the corresponding period last year. The penalty for the first offender is a fine of S$150 (US$87) and the subsequent offense will be given Corrective Works Orders by the courts to perform 2-3 hours of cleaning of housing estates and the beaches.
