Spiral galaxy NGC 5248 in Bovier - Spiral galaxy NGC 5248 in Botes - NGC 5248 is a spiral galaxy located about 50 million years ago - light. It belongs to the Virgin's galaxy cluster. NGC 5248 is a spiral galaxy that is part of the Virgo Cluster: however on a star chart the galaxy is found to be within constellation boundaries of Bootes. Short exposures of this galaxy show the bright structures of the central regions. Many dust lanes, HII (red) regions, and blue stellar associations populate this busy area. Deeper exposures such as the image to the left begin to show the two tenous and dim outer arms of the galaxy. This galaxy seems to be a mix between M81 with two distinct arms and M100 with detailed nucleus. NGC 5248 is estimated to be 50 million light years away

Short exposures of this galaxy show the bright structures of the central regions. Many dust lanes, HII (red) regions, and blue stellar associations populate this busy area. Deeper exposures such as the image to the left begin to show the two tenous and dim outer arms of the galaxy. This galaxy seems to be a mix between M81 with two distinct arms and M100 with detailed nucleus. NGC 5248 is estimated to be 50 million light years away

Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - NGC 5078 is a spiral galaxy located about 95 million years ago - light. A small galaxy, IC 879, at the bottom of the picture, is probably interacting with it. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. NGC 5078 is a lenticular (lens - shaped) galaxy crossed by a distinct dusty band which is seen against the bright background of the galaxy itself. The dust lane is warped and broadened, probably by interaction with the faint companion galaxy IC 879, which is itself distorted into an 'S' shape by the interaction. The slightly bluish colour of parts of the fainter galaxy is suggestive of star formation, probably triggered by the interaction. Encounters between galaxies such as this are common, and often lead to them merging into a single entity. It is likely that the dust lane of NGC 5078 is the remnant of a dusty spiral which fell into it long ago. The galaxies are about 80 million light years distant

Seyfert's Sextet Group of Galaxies in the Snake - Seyfert's Sextet group of galaxies - This group of interacting galaxies resides approximately 190 million years ago - light in the constellation of the Snake and extends over 100,000 years - light. The small spiral galaxy seen from the front does not belong to this group. Only a chance alignment makes it appear as if it is part of the group.
