Remnants of Supernova of Vails - detail - Pencil Nebula (NGC 2376) - Remnants from a star that exploded thousands of years ago created a celestial abstract portrait, as captured in this image of the Pencil Nebula. Officially known as NGC 2736, the Pencil Nebula is part of the huge Vela supernova remnant, located in the southern constellation Vela. Discovered by Sir John Herschel in the 1840s, the nebula's linear appearance triggered its popular name. The nebula's shape suggests that it is part of the supernova shock wave that recently encountered a region of dense gas. Nebula NGC 6164 - 5 in the Rule - The field around NGC 6164 - 65 - This nebula is located about 4000 years from Earth. It's a bipolar nebula around a hot O star at the end of life. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Very hot, massive stars lose substantial amounts of matter from their surfaces during much of their brief lives. Mass - loss is usually a fairly steady process but some stars occasionally develop instabilities and have major outbursts. This star has thrown off at least two distinct lots of material during its lifetime, the brightest and most recent being the bright lobes of NGC 6164 - 5 at the centre of the picture while a much fainter rim of nebulosity can be seen at a considerable distance from the central star, indicating an earlier episode of violent ejection. The nebula is at a distance of about 4200 light years

Mass - loss is usually a fairly steady process but some stars occasionally develop instabilities and have major outbursts. This star has thrown off at least two distinct lots of material during its lifetime, the brightest and most recent being the bright lobes of NGC 6164 - 5 at the centre of the picture while a much fainter rim of nebulosity can be seen at a considerable distance from the central star, indicating an earlier episode of violent ejection. Ten thousand years ago a star exploded. The supernova remnant is called the Veil Nebula. Here is the west end of the Veil Nebula known as NGC 6960 or the Witch's Broom Nebula. The rampaging gas gains its colors by impacting and exciting existing nearby gas. The supernova remnant lies about 1,400 light - years away towards the constellation of Cygnus. The bright star 52 Cygnus is visible with the unaided eye from a dark location but unrelated to the ancient supernova. The filaments in the right upper portion of the image is commonly called Pickering's Triangle. It was discovered in 1904 by Williamina Fleming of the Harvard Observatory while examining photographic plates of the region. Like the European Space Agency's Huygens probe, this probe carries its own light source as the surface of Titan is only 0.1 percent as bright as the Earth's. Titan is host to a plethora of organic (carbon - based) compounds, hence this is one of the few places in the Solar System where life outside of the Earth may have evolved. In many ways, Titan resemble a frozen primordial Earth, though the greatest obstacle to Titan harboring life - - as we know it - - is the extreme cold. Even though all the chemical ingredients are present, Titan simply may not be warm enough to initiate the chemical reactions required for life. Perhaps sometime in the next decades such a mission to Titan will be a reality
