Image description

Captain Ralph H. Tate, with head bandage, is questioned on November 24 at the Meiringen military airfield by media people, to his right is his father, General Tate. The injured pilot of the crash plane was the last to be flown out of the crash site on the Gauligletscher. On 19 November 1946 an American military aircraft, a Douglas C-53 Dakota (military version of the DC-3), crashed onto the Gauligletscher in the Bernese Oberland with twelve persons on board. All passengers involved in an accident can be rescued alive after an elaborate rescue operation. The two Swiss military pilots Victor Hug and Pista Hitz bring the accident victims to safety with two Fieseler Storch aircraft of the Swiss Army at the airfield Unterbach near Meiringen
