LBJ State of Union War on Poverty

Congress President Johnson declares an unconditional war on poverty. The White House Rose Garden is the scene of an unprecedented newsreel record as President Lyndon B. Johnson briefs reporters before delivering his State of the Union message to Congress. Then, there are last minute revisions with speechwriter Ted C. Sorensen before the President leaves the oval office for the Capitol with Mrs. Johnson and one of his daughters. The President reveals to Congress that spending for the coming year would be less than a million drop from last year. On domestic issues, he calls anew for Civil Rights and an attack on unemployment and the ever-present problems of the poor. Standing before Congress President Johnson declares an unconditional war on poverty in America. He announces a 25% cutback in material for nuclear weapons. The President also had a warning to any aggressors.
