Dal primo prototipo del 1905 disegnato da Joseph Barter si passò ben presto a produrre il motore a due cilindri contrapposti in senso longitudinale che caratterizzò per tanti anni la produzione della Douglas.Fu una moto molto apprezzata per la quasi totale assenza di vibrazioni che il disegno del motore boxer garantiva. La Douglas cessò l'attività nel 1957.
