Image description

British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Lady by British (English) School, 17th century. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young lady, seated, turned slightly to the left, head inclined to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white chemise under a grey satin dress and blue cloak; her right hand resting on cloak on a plinth; a classical urn behind. Oliver Millar supposed the portrait to be by John Riley (1646-1691), but this attribution must be regarded as very tentative. A 1930 inventory describes it as by Sir Peter Lely.
