William Jones (formerly Langham) was made a baronet in 1774. He took the name of Jones after his marriage to Elizabeth, sister and co-heiress of William Jones of Ramsbury Manor, Wiltshire. Bought by Mrs Bambridge apparently in the mistaken belief that the sitter was the son-in-law of the mathematician of the same name, who had been tutor and friend to the 1st Earl of Hardwicke.
