Image description

Edmund Bristow (Eton 1787 – Eton 1876). Oil painting on canvas, Frederick William Hervey, Lord Hervey, later Earl Jermyn, and finally, 2nd Marquess of Bristol (1800-1864) and his brother The Hon. (later Lord) George Hervey (1803-1838) by Edmund Bristow (Eton 1787 – Eton 1876), signed and dated bottom right: E.Bristow. 1812. As boys at Eton; they are seen standing and seated respectively by a tree, each with his dog, the College Chapel in the right middle distance. The boys wear dark jackets, grey trousers and white shirts with neck-ties. The elder boy, standing at the centre, has a book under his arm; the smaller boy kneels with his left hand resting on an open book. Dark background of trees. Bristow lived at Windsor, and was patronised both by the Court and by Eton boys and tutors. He was known chiefly as an animal, sporting and landscape painter. However, he died in such complete obscurity at the age of 88 that the Art Journal, writing his obituary, could discover nothing to say about him. Ickworth, Suffolk (Accredited Museum)
