Image description

This is one of three ‘little stories’ commissioned by the Florentine banker Giovanmaria Benintendi for his family’s palace in Florence. Despite the fine details, it was probably hung high on a wall, perhaps above a wedding chest. Albertinelli shows episodes from the Creation story in an idealised version of the Arno valley near Florence. At left, God creates the animals and then Adam, in the foreground. Further right, Eve emerges from Adam’s rib. Finally, a serpent (with a human face) tempts Eve to offer Adam the forbidden fruit.
