Lydia Aris holds her daughter Mariam, aged nine months, during a demonstration by Kenyan Maasai women outside the British High Commission in Nairobi August 14, 2003. The protest was aimed at pressuring the British government to hold an independent public inquiry into alleged rapes of women over the past 30 years by British troops during annual military exercises held in the north of the East African country. Aris alleges Mariam was born as a result of rape. Britain's Ministry of Defence is holding its own inquiry into the alleged assaults and has declined to comment on the allegations.
