This study of a seated townsman, formerly attributed to Pieter the Elder Bruegel (c.1525-69), was executed by Jacob Savery’s younger brother and presumed student, Roelandt. By extracting models from Bruegel’s works, he used the master’s figures as a foundation for his own studies drawn from life. Believed to have been employed by the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, Roelandt Savery likely had direct access to the Emperor’s notable collection of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder whilst working in Prague.
