On 5th November 2013, Royal Mail released its Christmas stamp collection. This year's designs focuses on the Madonna and Child.
The 88p stamp, depicting a detail from St Roch Praying to the Virgin for an End to the Plague (1780) by Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), was sourced from Bridgeman Art Library.

Madonna and Child Theme
In this image, Jacques-Louis David portrays the Virgin Mary as protector and intercessor. St. Roch, the patron saint of plague-sufferers, appeals direcly to the Virgin, who intercedes with her son.
David was a French historical painter working in the Neo-Classical style. He is most famous for his portrait of Napoleon crossing the Alps (1800-01) and the death of French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat (1793).
