This unfinished painting demonstrates John Isaac Richardson's working methods. The background of the scene, showing the stableyard and woodland, is complete and very detailed. The image of the saddled horse is almost finished, except for its hooves and the saddle stirrups. The reins attached to its bridle end in mid-air quite abruptly, and it is possible the artist intended to include a figure holding them. To the right of the painting is the outline of a dog, which the artist began painting in but never completed;
