Image description

The quayside was originally Newcastle's commercial heart. In this area were important merchants' houses, warehouses, the Mansion House, the Guildhall and the Customs House. TM Richardson's view shows the enormously tall warehouses and other buildings that crowded together along the quayside and up the hill to the Castle. A coal keel is in the centre of the view, on the far side of the river. Newcastle's prosperity depended on the combination of her port and coal. Thomas Miles Richardson was the leading Newcastle artist at this time.
