In this painting the artist has chosen to focus fully on the haycart and oxen. It is the most detailed part of the scene and placed in the centre of the image. In contrast, the surrounding countryside has been painted quite loosely, especially towards the edges of the paper. It is also interesting to note that there are no people present in the scene, not even a driver for the cart. John Isaac Richardson painted many images of cattle and farming activities;
