Image description

Dr. Jerry Lemler, president and CEO of Alcor Life Extension Foundation, stands in the Patient Care Bay area where the heads and bodies of 49 individuals are being held in cold storage suspension, at the company's headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona, July 12, 2002. The body of former Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams is believed to be held at Alcor but the company will not confirm that. There are seven, floor-to-ceiling tanks that contain bodies held in an inverted position along with heads. Two smaller tanks in the bay contain the heads of individuals. The bodies are storage in liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees celsius (-320 degrees farenheit). The first person to be held in a cryogenic state is Dr. James Bedford, a California psychiatrist, who was frozen on January 12, 1967. REUTER/Jeff Topping JT/GN
