Image description

May be part of a cycle commissioned by the Duke of Bavaria, William IV in 1537 and 1540. Weltlandschaft, an imaginary panoramic landscape with Rome in the distance. In 361 BC, Titus Manlius fought in the Roman army against the Gauls who had advanced on the city and challenged its bravest man to single combat with one of their warriors. He accepted the challenge and won a duel fought on the bridge here. Afterwards, he hung the defeated Gaul’s torque (neck ring) round his neck, earning him the nickname Torquatus, “the torqued one”.
