He fed on the milk of the deer and the goats from which he made cheese. He tame beasts. Bears, lions and tigers followed him like sheep followed their shepherd. The various stages of his torment are depicted on this 19th century engraving: at first he was thrown into a burning furnace, he was delivered to ferocious beasts which instead of devouring him lay down at his feet. At last a fork was planted in his belly, and he took away himself.
