Saint Mammes (Saint-Mammes, St-Mammes) martyr - According to the legend, Mammes (or Mamans) of Cesaree, whose name means “” the one who was breastfed”” would not be within a modest family of Cappadocia (in Asia Minor, present-day Turkey) in 259 and his martyrdom would have occurred in 275 at the age of fifteen or sixteen years. He fed on the milk of the deer and the goats from which he made cheese. He tame beasts. Bears, lions and tigers followed him like sheep followed their shepherd. The various stages of his torment are depicted on this 19th century engraving: at first he was thrown into a burning furnace, he was delivered to ferocious beasts which instead of devouring him lay down at his feet. At last a fork was planted in his belly, and he took away himself. Traditionally, it is invoked by people suffering from hernia colic or eventration - colic - stomach ache - bowels - fete on 17 August -
