On 26 February 1960, during a visit to the South of France, Charles de Gaulle, President of the French Republic, delivered a speech to the Town Hall of Narbonne. He had previously visited the Malvezy uranium processing plant (Malvesy, Malvesi, Malvezi) opened the previous year in 1959. In his speech, he delivered in the presence of Pierre Guillaumat, minister responsible for atomic energy, research and public service (on photography, in profile to the left after the flag) and Olivier Guichard (future minister and then close advisor to the President of the Republic, just behind the general), de Gaulle fustige and ridiculed the “hysterics” that denounce France's nuclear policy. A few days earlier (February 13, 1960) had taken place the first French atomic bomb test (experimentation called Gerboise Bleue) in Reggane, in the Algerian desert - Narbonne's speech, recorded by RTF (Radio Television Francaise, whose microphone we see), was broadcast on television at the time and can be viewed today on INA - nuclear industry, atom, deterrence, waste, ecology - anonymous photography, Patrice Cartier collection -
