The Pope elevated St Therese of Lisieux, the humble French saint who inspired Mother Theresa to a lifetime of devotion, to a privileged place in the male-dominated Roman Catholic Church. The Pontiff pronounced the child nun, who died 100 years ago aged 24, a Doctor of the Church, a rank reserved for a handful of saints whose spirituality has deeply influenced the life of the Church and who are deemed some of its best teachers.
