Nana Sahib, 1858 circa.
One of seven photographs of prints after Lieutenant George Robert Miller, G F Atkinson and Orlando Norie 1858 circa.
This image is said to portray the Nana Sahib (Dhondu Pant), the deposed Maharajah of Bithur and the man behind the notorious massacre at Cawnpore during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1858). Legend has it that it was made after he was arrested by the Maharajah of Scindia at Gwalior. It seems very unlikely that it depicts the Nana whose fate is unknown, although there were regular reports of his being seen alive up to 1895. He probably died in Nepal in the 1860s.
