Electoral poster of the SED in 1946 : Wilhelm Pieck (1876-1960) later (1949) the first President of the German Democratic Republic and Otto Grotewohl (1894-1964) German politician and the first Prime Minister of the German Democratic Republic from 1949 until his death in 1964. In 1946 the KPD and the eastern branch of the DOD merged as the Socialist Unity Party (SED) with Pieck and Grotewohl as co-chairmen.
