Faust and Margaret (colour litho)

Faust and Margaret, hand-coloured artist proof reproduced from a painting by Carl Becker. The picture is a representation of Faust's first meeting with Margaret. Though the innocent maiden appears to shrink from the advances of the handsome stranger her eyes are returning to his intent gaze with an expression of fascinated interest. In the background Mephistopheles is seen looking on with an expression of mocking insight that suggests a knowledge of the tragic outcome of the meeting.
