Image description

By the turn of the century grain was usually ground in a central mill, but on this late summer day Mary Heraghty is doing it herself, with a quern, a time-consuming but effective Stone-Age device. Note the boy on the right, dressed as a girl, for fear the fairies might carry him off. This was a common way of protecting precious sons.
