Image description

Panoramic view of Union artillery-pieces mounted along the parapets of Fort Carroll in Maryland, near Giesboro Point, D.C., as part of the chain of defenses around Washington; probably photographed late during the Civil War, ca. 1865. Guns include 32-pounders mounted atop front-pintle barbette carriages, and stubbier 8-inch howitzers mounted on siege carriages; note the gabions half-buried in the sandy parapets, as well as the wet ditch surrounding the fort.
