The Cretan Rebellion against the Turks, 1896. Early in 1896 a handful of discontented politicians collected in the mountains of Crete, and took the title of the "Epitrope," or "Committee of Reform." Some slight reverses which it succeeded in inflicting on Turkish troops brought thousands of armed Christians to its side, and in April it found itself strong enough to besiege the garrison of Vamos. The Sultan dispatched an expedition which relieved Vamos, with the loss of two hundred men, and, marching through western Crete, pillaged and devastated the country.
