Cutaway side-view and overhead diagrams for mounting a heavy U.S. Army mortar in a field-emplacement, a standard tactical practice during the American Civil War, accompanied by terms identifying its constituent parts. Originally engraved for publication as Plate 21 between pages 108-109 of the Instruction for Heavy Artillery manual (Washington, DC: Gideon & Co., Printers, 1851).
