A young girl child breaks D-size batteries in a battery recycling workshop (photo)

Hundreds of children break used batteries to recycle them in similar workshops on the outskirts of Dhaka. They extract carbon rod from the center of the batteries, zinc casing, and coated brass contact cap. All recycled components are then sent to manufacturers of new batteries and to the wholesale market, In the process of breaking the batteries, children inhale carbon dust from the batteries throughout the day. They get between 10-15 Taka per day. Children work bare feet and very often step on sharp objects like tin of broken piece of glass that causes serious infections. As they spend good part of the day working in polluted factory, inhaling harmful gasses and particles, they often remain sick.
