Travel landscape attractions in train Lhasa-Shanghai. The surface of the glaciers on the roof of the world shrinks rapidly, melting the permafrost. Global warming is causing the disappearance of permafrost, the perpetual ice on which part of the last section of the railway on the Tibetan plateau has risen. If the forecasts of a pessimistic government study carried out by more than 500 Chinese scientists are fulfilled, more than 80% of this permafrost will have disappeared in 2100. In the last 50 years, 82% of the ice has melted and, if the speed at which it disappears is not reduced, in 2050 there will only be a third of the current frozen water. All of Everest's glaciers could vanish by 2100. In addition, CO₂ and methane are released during thawing of permafrost, further amplifying the anthropogenic effect of greenhouse gases.
