Image title
A woman in a boat on Lake Titicaca, Peru, 2022 (photography)
Uros Island, Lake Titicaca, peru, South America. A woman in a boat on Lake Titicaca.
Climate change has lowered the level of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, by 81 cm.
The water level of Lake Titicaca, shared by Bolivia and Peru, has dropped a total of 81 centimeters in recent months and is 30 cm below its minimum level, which could put aquatic biodiversity at risk. If the level continues to drop, it could cause a loss in the surface of totoras (vegetable fiber that grows in swampy lands) where some of the fish reproduce and which forms part of the habitat of endemic species, as well as the base for the construction of the floating islands where the aurochs live.
Located at 3,800 meters above sea level, Lake Titicaca occupies an area of more than 8,500 square kilometers and serves as a natural border between Bolivia and Peru. Water is one of the scarcest resources on the planet and one of the most affected by climate change. The alteration in water resources in ecosystems as important as that of Lake Titicaca generates great environmental, economic and social problems.
