Edward Dayes (1763-1804 The Priory Church, Tynemouth, 1790 pencil & watercolour Height 51.6 x Width 39.6 cm bottom centre : inscription : signed, dated, pen and ink : E. Dayes 1790 TWCMS : B7445 The fortified Priory was built in the 13th and 14th centuries and closed in 1538. Hundreds of years earlier, this area had been the burial place of Oswin and Osred, kings of Northumbria. In the late 18th century, some artists and scholars became interested in Britain's ancient heritage. This picture was reproduced in engraving to illustrate John Britton's ''Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain', published 1807-26.
